Nate Willems was born and raised in Anamosa, and graduated from Anamosa High School in 1997. He received his B.S.F.S. from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in International Politics in 2001.
Nate Willems worked on a variety of Democratic campaigns in Iowa both during and after college. He was a field organizer for Leonard Boswell’s re-election in 1998 and managed two Iowa House races for the Truman Fund in 2000. In 2001, Nate returned to Iowa to work on the campaigns of John
Norris and Dr. Julie Thomas; he also served as legislative clerk for Rep. Ro Foege. Nate was a regional director for Howard Dean’s campaign in the Iowa Caucuses.
In 2004, Nate enrolled at the University of Iowa College of Law and completed his degree in May, 2007. He spent a summer working in the law office of Jim Larew, and one summer in the legal department of IUOE Local 49. Nate Willems is now a self-employed attorney at Sole, McManus, Pearson & Willems, P.C., practicing primarily in the areas of labor and employment law.
Nate and his wife Maggie have been married for 3 years and had their first child, Ava Grace Willems, in June. Maggie is a Social Studies teacher at Mount Vernon High School and coaches volleyball and track. Nate and Maggie are members of First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon. They reside in Lisbon.
Nate is active in the Linn County Democratic Central Committee, the Lincoln Highway Lisbon Lions Club, and the Mount Vernon Athletic Boosters.
